Message from the President
The United Way of the Klamath Basin board of directors made a strategic decision in 2009. The "great recession" significantly impacted our United Way's ability to raise sufficient funds for its member agencies. The campaign decreased by 20% from 2007 to 2010.
With a growing demand for services and fewer campaign dollars raised, the United Way board of directors chose to allocate the majority of its reserve funds (about $100,000) in 2009, 2010 and 2011 in order to help its member agencies maintain their current level of services to people in need. With no additional reserve funds to allocate going forward, it was imperative that United Way succeed in stopping its downward fund raising trend and raise more money than the prior year. In 2011, that was accomplished! The community campaign raised $28,000 more dollars in 2011 than in 2010. We appreciate your generous support.
The 2012 community campaign will be very challenging to post any increase in giving. The public sector is in dire financial straights and competition for public contributions will grow even more in 2012 (a national political year, the Olympics, federal cutbacks everywhere). Please remember to support your local United Way. Thousands of people and our Klamath way of life depends on it. Thank you.
